Confessions of a TRX Virgin

July 3rd, 2010 by Guest Blogger

I  took my first TRX class at Aire Urban  Performance Co op last week. As someone who’s worked out for years and taken all sorts of classes–from boot camp to hot yoga flow to spin–and who was in relatively good shape, I didn’t think it would be as tough as it was. Apparently, it was invented by a Navy Seal, which really should have tipped me off.

The TRX suspension trainers looked innocuous enough–hanging adjustable straps with handles that accommodate hands and feet, depending on the exercise.

Jen, the instructor, had us start by running the stairs in the On Broadway building. All NINE flights.  After I picked myself off the floor, we then proceeded to do exercises I’ve done before, but never using the suspension trainer. Suspended push-ups, ab work, single leg lunges, jumping squats and more–all with the extra ooommpph provided by the extra resistance due to the trainer. Luckily, there were only five other people in the class, so Jen adjusted me when I needed it. (Which was a lot.) Needless to say, all the big muscles were working and all the little sleepy muscles (like those in my upper back and lower abs) woke up!

Not only did I get toning work, but because of the intensity and speed (and stairs, hello!) I must have torched at least 500 calories.

Was I sore? Yes, I was sore (and humbled) for a good two days, but a good sore, kind of like I had just done a military work out, which I kind of did.

Aire Athlete Dispatch from Boise 70.3

June 16th, 2010 by Aire

Good Times (sort of) in Boise
A few quick notes here on the Boise 70.3 as I am late to the game as far as race reports go and I don’t simply want to repeat what everyone else has already said.

Boise is a really pretty town with a great vibe, I highly recommend a visit (stay downtown)
The country side is beautiful
The course, on a good day, would be very, very fast
Yes, it was ridiculously windy and I, like Felipe and Chris, was riding a disc. Not great under any circumstances but with my lack of bike handling skills…..fugetaboutit
The water was cold, but the air temp was warm = not so bad. Loved the first race in the new DeSotto suit
Easily the best run course I have seen along and over the river on very fast (on a good day) route
Big congrats to all of Team Breakaway racers but especially Whitney for backing up St. George with another AG win and a slot to Clearwater and C. Berg for 2nd AG and a return trip to Clearwater
And finally it was especially great to see my good friend Ben and his wife who DROVE up from Boulder to race (Ben) and hang out after.

Best of all there don’t appear to be any injury set backs. I only had 3, 6 mile runs coming into Boise and I didn’t know what to expect. Out of the water 71st, off the bike 21st and 12th to finish off the run for my best half Ironman placement. Next time out I plan to be joining the Clearwater crew……

Thanks to Adam and Catlin at Thrive Wellness as well as Nick at Muscle Specialists for putting me back together!

Next up IM Switzerland.

Aire Athlete Dispatches from Boston

April 21st, 2010 by Aire

It’s Tuesday morning after race day and Jen and I are about to head out for a little brunch before making our way to the airport. If you’ve seen the twitter or FB feeds you already know yesterday was a tough day for me. I’ve been fighting the same lower back issues for about 9 months now and the flight over on Saturday saw me waking up with a serious pinched nerve (for lack of better terminology) on the lower left very similar to what I experienced coming home from Seattle over the holidays. Having been through it before I had a feeling what was in store. I was able to run but it was pretty painful from the first step. I ran a little mantra over and over in my head all day to try and keep the focus on the stride and not my back – “light, easy, smooth…what the hands do the feet do”. It helped to keep me together better than expected for quite some time. Coming into Boston I was pretty excited because I had been able to put together a solid 7 weeks of running and felt like I was striding better than ever thanks to the work Adam and Caitlin have been doing on me. I felt that on a good day I was in form to go somewhere between 3:12 and 3:18. Waking up Monday morning my focus shifted to making sure I finished the race ….period. That being said I moved through the first 10K in about 46 min and the half at 1:40 with a vague shot of 3:20 or better still lingering in my head. My form really started to degrade from their on in. I believe my last two 10 segments were 52 min and 57 min. That last 3 miles was the most painful of any race for me yet, including Ironman. Hopefully Adam and Caitlin can work some magic on me and get me back up and running (literally) soon. Half Ironman and Ironman are going to get here fast.
That aside Boston is always a great place to visit. We had a fantastic pre race dinner at Sportello, a little diner style restaurant with a fairly high concept menu that delivered. Wine and cocktails before hand were at Drink below in the basement. A great spot with a focus on old school, hand made cocktails. Post race dinner was at Eastern Standard, sort of a Ocean Aire/steak house kind of joint which was bustling with post race activity. I was adventurous and tried bone marrow for the first time. Reminded me a lot of escargot…..
I will keep you posted on the recovery progress in the near term. Thanks to everyone for their support and good wishes.
