Training with Power for an Ironman PR

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Hi everyone and Happy Thanksgiving!  Karl here from the Aire Urban/Breakaway Training Triathlon racing team.  I wanted to chime in for just a few minutes about some interesting developments in my training over the last several months since the Power Tap/Computrainer cycling center opened at the Aire Urban Performance indoor cycling center in downtown San Diego.  I just returned home from racing Ironman Arizona where I set a PR of 10 hrs 58 min with a 5:18 bike split (23 mins faster than my previous best bike split over the 112 mi distance).  Since the cycling center opened back in August almost all of my key training has been done indoors on the Saris Power Tap 300pt and the Multi Rider Computrainer system.  I regularly attended the Tues/Thurs morning and evening Crank Cycling Threshold Power classes with my “long” rides consisting of 4 to 5 hours on the Power Tap bike at Ironman Race Pace or on the Multi Rider Computrainer system where I pre-road the Ironman AZ bike course at least 4 times in the build up to the race.  I couldn’t be happier with the way I felt on the bike.  Not only was the 5:18 bike split a huge improvement for me but my legs still felt relatively fresh coming off the bike and I felt solid all through the 26.2 mi marathon en route to my sub 11 Ironman.  Next up for me in 2010 is Boise 70.3 in June and Ironman Switzerland in July.  I am also looking to set a PR at the Feb 7th Fiesta Island TT with a sub 28 min effort.  I plan to stick with the indoor quality training at Aire Urban Performance in Downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp District.  Starting in December we will be running the multi rider Computrainer system on the California 70.3 Oceanside course for all of you looking to get ready for that.  Then we will switch over to the IM Switzerland course shortly after the California race is over.  Come on in and join me for some high quality indoor cycling and get your own PR’s in 2010.

Rocking the indoor training

The race season is winding down with Ironman Arizona coming up this weekend.  A strong contingent from Break Away Training/Aire Urban Performance will be there to represent.  Many of our athletes have been taking advantage of San Diego’s only computrainer AND powertap cycling center to get the race legs in shape.  You can preview/ride virtual courses of just about any Ironman or Half Ironman on the multi rider computrainer system and the Saris Power Tap bikes are one of the best ways to keep track of your performance gains.  We will be firing up workouts to help you gear up for California 70.3 early in 2010 so check out the offerings on line and be sure to “friend” Aire Urban on Facebook to get all the latest.  There is a special event tomorrow night hosted by Optimal Nutrition at The Corner in East Village so come on out to see us there and say hi!  Hopefully you caught Jen of Aire Urban Pilates and TRX as well as Olympian Dan Walsh of Aire’s Engine Room Fitness repping at the LuLu Lemon fashion show last week at Hotel Indigo.  Stay tuned for details on the Aire Urban Anti Christmas Party coming soon.  Trust me, you won’t want to miss it.
